A five-day manhunt for the suspect in the brazen murder of UnitedHealth executive Brian Thompson outside a Manhattan hotel has ended with the arrest of Luigi Mangione, 26, in Altoona, Pennsylvania. Mangione, found with a "ghost gun" and false IDs, allegedly targeted Thompson.
Luigi Mangione, 26, was arrested in Altoona, Pennsylvania, on suspicion of killing UnitedHealth executive Brian Thompson outside a Manhattan hotel. Mangione was identified by McDonald's employees who recognized him from news reports. Upon arrest, police found a "ghost gun" with a silencer, false IDs, cash, and electronic devices in his possession. The weapon and items matched those used in the crime.
Mangione, a Maryland native and University of Pennsylvania graduate, reportedly harbored ill will toward corporate America, as evidenced by a handwritten document found during the investigation. Authorities believe Mangione waited for Thompson outside the hotel, shot him from behind, and fled the scene by bike before taking a bus out of Manhattan.
He was arraigned on gun and forgery charges and denied bail after prosecutors argued he was a flight risk. Investigators are probing Mangione’s activities in Pennsylvania, potential accomplices, and any further targets. Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro confirmed Mangione would soon face charges in New York.
