French public broadcaster France Télévisions has removed the replay of a programme in which actress Adèle Haenel accused Israel of committing genocide in Gaza and France of complicity.

Actress speaks out on literary programme

Haenel said in a video posted on Instagram that she appeared live on France 5’s literary programme La Grande Librairie on 9 September.

She said she spoke during the programme’s closing segment, when guests were given complete freedom to express themselves. Haenel used the opportunity to address what she described as efforts to silence people speaking out about sexual violence, as well as the situation in Gaza.

According to Haenel, her team recorded the segment because they anticipated that her comments would be cut from any future broadcast. Instead, she said, the broadcaster removed the entire programme replay from its website.

Backlash from left-wing lawmakers

The move drew swift criticism from lawmakers with the left-wing France Unbowed (LFI) party.

Gabrielle Cathala said on X that the replay was removed after Haenel denounced what she described as Israel’s genocide against Palestinians and France’s complicity.

Fellow LFI lawmaker Danièle Obono called the decision “scandalous,” while her colleague Aymeric Caron said Haenel’s comments on Gaza were accurate.

Caron also accused France Télévisions of failing in its coverage of Gaza over the past three years and called on the broadcaster to explain who had pressured it to remove the replay.

Broadcaster cites lack of counterbalance

French magazine Télérama reported that France Télévisions said it removed the replay because Haenel’s remarks had not been balanced by an opposing viewpoint during the programme.

What Haenel actually said

Speaking towards the end of the programme, Haenel told viewers: “I have also made a decision: I am going to speak.”

She went on to say, “The State of Israel is committing genocide in Palestine, and France is complicit. Do not accept the unacceptable. Therefore, impose sanctions on Israel and free Palestine.”
