The Democratic Republic of Congo’s president has pledged to pursue justice for victims of the conflict in the east despite a peace deal with Rwanda, calling the accord a hopeful yet fragile step toward regional stability.

President Felix Tshisekedi reaffirmed Congo's commitment to accountability and justice for victims of violence in the eastern region, even after a peace agreement with Rwanda was signed in Washington, DC on 27 June.

In his Independence Day address, he said the deal offers a path toward lasting peace but stressed its fragility and the need for collective support.

The US- and Qatar-brokered agreement aims to halt hostilities and end external support for armed groups.

While Congo's foreign minister hailed it as a diplomatic breakthrough, the rebel coalition AFC/M23 warned that deeper issues remain unresolved, urging inclusive talks in Doha.
