Spain’s Foreign Minister Jose Manuel Albares said on Monday he will ask the EU Council to suspend the bloc’s agreement with Israel and back an arms embargo in response to human rights violations in Gaza.
In addition to the suspension of the association agreement - the legal framework that governs political and trade relations between the EU and Israel - Albares said he will propose an EU-wide arms embargo on Israel.
He also plans to call on the Council to impose targeted sanctions against individuals deemed to be obstructing efforts toward a two-state solution between Israel and Palestine.
“These steps are necessary to uphold the EU’s commitment to human rights and to international law,” Albares said, adding that the situation in Gaza requires a unified and decisive European response.
