The US will host the official signing of a peace agreement between the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and Rwanda, the State Department announced Friday.

“This is a milestone achievement and a significant step toward peace in that region,” State Department spokeswoman Tammy Bruce said.

The two countries signed a preliminary peace deal Wednesday, with the final agreement planned for June 27.

The deal includes commitments to respect borders, end fighting, disarm armed groups, create joint security coordination, and support refugee returns, humanitarian aid, and regional cooperation.

The UN says over 7.8 million people have been displaced by the conflict.
