UN Secretary-General António Guterres has expressed deep sorrow over the tragic Air India plane crash in the Indian city of Ahmedabad, which claimed the lives of more than 200 people.
In a statement released by his spokesperson, Farhan Haq, Guterres conveyed his profound sadness over the 12 June disaster. The crash resulted in casualties not only among the passengers and crew on board but also among residents at the BJ Medical College hostel, which the aircraft struck during the incident.
Guterres extended his heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims, to the people and Government of India, and to all other nations whose citizens were affected by the tragedy. He also wished a swift and full recovery to those injured in the crash.
The Air India flight 171, en route to London’s Gatwick Airport, had 230 passengers and 12 crew members on board when it crashed shortly after takeoff, hitting the medical college hostel during lunchtime. At least one passenger is confirmed to have survived.
According to Air India, the passengers included 169 Indian nationals, 53 British nationals, 7 Portuguese citizens, and 1 Canadian.
