Vietnam court upholds death sentence in $12B fraud case

Truong My Lan, the chairwoman of a major real estate firm in Vietnam, has had her death sentence upheld by the court following a massive $12.5 billion fraud case.

In April, she was convicted of embezzling nearly 3% of Vietnam’s 2022 GDP, a crime prosecutors called "unprecedented," severely damaging the economy and shaking investor confidence.

The Ho Chi Minh City court rejected her appeal, ruling that her death sentence will stand unless she repays three-quarters of the stolen funds.

Lan, a central figure in Vietnam’s anti-corruption crackdown, known as "Blazing Furnace," had hoped for leniency after admitting guilt and making partial repayments. However, the court found these actions insufficient. Lan can still request a legal review, but for now, her sentence remains unchanged.
