IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi has reaffirmed the agency’s support for Ukraine during his 12th visit to the country since the start of the Russia-Ukraine war.
In Kyiv, Grossi met with Energy Minister Herman Halushchenko and Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiha. He said the talks focused on nuclear safety and rebuilding Ukraine’s energy system. This includes the development of new units at the Khmelnytskyi Nuclear Power Plant, repair work at the Chornobyl site, and assessments of damaged substations.
Grossi also highlighted the importance of the IAEA’s continued presence at the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant, which has been under Russian control since March 2022. The site has remained a major concern due to repeated security threats.
Ukraine’s energy minister said only a licensed Ukrainian operator can ensure safety at the site and called for the plant’s full return to Ukrainian control.
