U.S. President Donald Trump has asked Japan to partner in developing his proposed $175 billion Golden Dome missile defense system. The move could influence ongoing tariff negotiations between the two nations.

President Donald Trump reportedly discussed joint cooperation with Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba on building the Golden Dome missile defense shield during a recent phone call, Nikkei reported. The collaboration would focus on technologies to intercept incoming threats and may also offer Tokyo leverage in its ongoing tariff talks with Washington. Trump has chosen a final design for the $175 billion project and appointed U.S. Space Force General Michael Guetlein to oversee its development, aiming for completion by 2029.

The Congressional Budget Office estimates the full cost of the Golden Dome at $831 billion over the next two decades. The U.S. and Japan have previously worked together on missile defense, including interceptors that can strike targets in space.
