Russian President Vladimir Putin has praised deepening ties with North Korea, saying Moscow and Pyongyang are coordinating their efforts to ensure “regional security and stability”.
In a message to North Korean leader Kim Jong Un on Saturday marking the 81st anniversary of Korea’s liberation from Japanese colonial rule, Putin said relations between the two countries had reached an “unprecedented level of comprehensive strategic partnership”.
“Our countries actively cooperate in all areas, coordinating their efforts to ensure regional security and stability,” Putin said, according to the Kremlin.
He expressed confidence that Moscow and Pyongyang would continue working together on bilateral and international issues “for the benefit of the Russian and Korean peoples”.
Russia and North Korea have significantly expanded their political, military and economic ties since Putin and Kim signed a comprehensive strategic partnership treaty in Pyongyang in June 2024. The agreement includes a mutual defence clause requiring assistance if either country comes under armed attack.
Their military cooperation has since become increasingly visible in Russia’s war against Ukraine.
Moscow and Pyongyang have acknowledged that North Korean troops were deployed to Russia and fought alongside Russian forces against Ukrainian troops in the Kursk region.
North Korea has also supplied Russia with artillery ammunition and ballistic missiles, according to Ukraine, South Korea and Western governments.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said earlier this month that Kyiv had information indicating Russia was preparing to receive tens of thousands of additional North Korean troops. Russia has not confirmed the claimed new deployment.
Putin’s message comes as the two countries continue to portray their growing partnership as part of broader efforts to challenge Western influence and strengthen cooperation on security and international affairs.
