Kurdish commander Mazloum Abdi says his forces are in direct contact with Türkiye and open to improving relations, including a potential meeting with President Erdoğan.
Mazloum Abdi, commander of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), said that his group has direct communication with Türkiye and is open to improving ties - even expressing willingness to meet Turkish President Tayyip Erdoğan.
Speaking to Shams TV, Abdi confirmed direct and mediated contacts with Türkiye and expressed hope for deepening dialogue. While the two sides fought during Syria’s 14-year civil war, Abdi noted that a temporary truce has held for two months and could become permanent.
Abdi said, “We are not in a state of war with Türkiye... we're open to developing ties.”
Al-Monitor reported that Türkiye had suggested a possible meeting between Abdi and a top Turkish official, but a Turkish source denied this. Erdoğan recently accused the SDF of stalling a deal with Syria’s interim government, which Abdi denied.
He also rejected claims of SDF ties to Israel but affirmed readiness for good relations with all neighboring countries.
