Pakistan's Prime Minister has warned that melting glaciers may intensify flooding, urging rich nations to fulfill climate finance pledges.

At the International High-Level Conference on Glaciers’ Preservation in Dushanbe, Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif highlighted the urgent threat posed by melting glaciers, warning of increased flooding risks. With over 30,000 glaciers, Pakistan is one of the most vulnerable countries to climate impacts despite contributing less than 1% to global emissions.

Sharif called on developed nations to deliver on their delayed climate finance commitments. He recalled the devastating 2022 floods that submerged a third of the country, causing $30 billion in damage and displacing millions. While pledges totaling $10 billion were made at a Geneva conference in early 2023, only $2.8 billion had been disbursed by mid-2024.
