Elon Musk announced Wednesday that he is leaving his role as a special adviser to President Donald Trump, ending a rocky chapter marked by major government layoffs, agency cuts, and political pushback.
Musk led efforts to slash federal bureaucracy and reduce government spending through the Department of Government Efficiency, known as DOGE. But his goals kept shrinking—from $2 trillion in cuts to just $150 billion—as he faced resistance from inside the administration and lawmakers.
Musk, who had planned to return full-time to his companies like Tesla and SpaceX, revealed his departure in a post on his social media platform X. He thanked President Trump for the opportunity to fight wasteful spending and said DOGE’s mission will continue.
The announcement came shortly after Musk criticized Trump’s signature spending and immigration bill, calling it a “massive spending bill” that increases the deficit and undermines his efforts.
