Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has called for greater unity across the Islamic world, saying Türkiye is seeking to strengthen alliances and reduce divisions amid growing instability in the region.
Speaking at an event in Istanbul marking Mawlid al-Nabi Week on Friday, Erdoğan said Muslim countries should work together to defend their rights and build regional peace and security.
“We believe there is virtue in unity; we are working to strengthen alliances and reduce disagreements both among ourselves and across the Islamic world,” he said.
Erdoğan said Türkiye’s efforts were aimed at creating “an atmosphere of peace and security” and that Ankara was ready to contribute to greater solidarity among Muslim countries.
The Turkish president also strongly criticised Israel, accusing its government of seeking to destabilise the wider region through its military actions.
Erdoğan described Zionism as a “radical, occupying, genocidal ideology” and said Türkiye was raising concerns over what he called its expansionist ambitions on behalf of people across the region, regardless of their religion.
He compared the international response to the conflicts in Gaza, West Bank and Lebanon with what he described as historical failures to act against atrocities committed under Adolf Hitler and Cambodian dictator Pol Pot.
He said Gaza had been turned into “the world’s largest children’s cemetery” and accused Israel of preventing Palestinians from accessing basic necessities.
Turning to Lebanon, Erdoğan said Israeli attacks had displaced 1.3 million people, killed more than 4,000 and wounded over 12,000.
Israel has rejected accusations that its military campaign in Gaza amounts to genocide, saying its operations target Hamas and that it seeks to minimise civilian casualties.
