The head of the U.N.'s nuclear watchdog, Rafael Grossi, said any new deal between the U.S. and Iran to limit Iran's nuclear program must include strict inspections.
Talks between the two countries are ongoing, as Iran has ramped up uranium enrichment to near weapons-grade levels since the U.S. left the 2015 nuclear deal.
Grossi stressed that solid oversight from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) should be a key part of any future agreement to make sure Iran is following the rules. While he didn’t demand a return to the previous inspection rules, he said any serious deal would need to be verified.
Though the IAEA isn’t directly part of the talks, Grossi said he’s in touch with both Iran and U.S. officials. He described the discussions as more flexible and practical rather than focused on strict legal terms, and added that despite disagreements, a compromise is still possible.
“There’s always a way,” Grossi said.
