A small plane crashed into a fog-covered San Diego neighborhood early Thursday, killing multiple people on board and sparking fires in at least 15 homes
San Diego police and fire officials said the plane had a capacity of eight to ten people, but it’s unclear how many were on board. Assistant Fire Chief Dan Eddy confirmed there were no injuries on the ground. Officials said the plane may have hit a power line.
The incident prompted evacuations across several blocks, according to authorities.
“We have jet fuel all over the place,” said Assistant Fire Chief Dan Eddy during a press briefing. “Our top priority is to search these homes and evacuate residents immediately.” He confirmed that multiple homes in the Murphy Canyon area were directly hit.
Visibility was extremely poor at the time of the crash, with Eddy noting, “You could barely see in front of you.”
The FAA reported that a Cessna 550 aircraft crashed near Montgomery-Gibbs Executive Airport. According to FlightAware, a Citation II jet from Wichita, Kansas, was scheduled to arrive to the airport at 3:47 a.m. San Diego officials confirmed the flight originated in the Midwest but have not released further details.
