A Mexican Navy training ship, Cuauhtémoc, collided with the Brooklyn Bridge breaking its masts, killing two crew members, and injuring 22 others, officials confirmed.
The Cuauhtémoc, adorned with lights and flying a large Mexican flag, struck the Brooklyn Bridge near Manhattan as it passed underneath. The ship’s 147-foot masts were too tall to clear the bridge’s arch, causing them to snap. Among the 277 people on board, two died and 22 were injured, with 19 receiving medical treatment, including three seriously hurt.
Mechanical problems are suspected to have caused the accident, though details remain under investigation. The bridge, completed in 1883 and a major New York City landmark, suffered no significant damage, and traffic resumed after inspection.
Mexico's ambassador to the U.S. and other officials were assisting those affected, while the ship was scheduled to continue its goodwill voyage to Iceland after departing New York.
