Russian President Vladimir Putin has appointed a delegation of senior officials to lead direct peace negotiations with Ukraine, but will not participate personally—despite proposing the talks himself.

Russian President Vladimir Putin announced late Wednesday the composition of a high-level delegation tasked with conducting direct negotiations with Ukraine to resolve the ongoing war. The announcement, published on the Kremlin’s official website, clarified that Putin will not be attending the talks himself.

The decision comes after days of speculation over whether the Russian leader would participate, especially after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy stated he would attend only if Putin were present.

The delegation includes several experienced figures who participated in the initial talks between Russia and Ukraine following Moscow’s 2022 invasion. Among them are presidential adviser Vladimir Medinsky and Deputy Defence Minister Alexander Fomin. Both were part of the negotiating team in the early weeks of the conflict.
