The number of ministers has been reduced from 39 to 29 in the new cabinet. Some key positions remain unchanged from the previous cabinet. For instance, François-Philippe Champagne and Dominic LeBlanc will continue handling U.S. trade matters. Melanie Joly has been moved from the Foreign Affairs Ministry to the Industry Ministry, with Anita Anand replacing her.
Former Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland will remain as Minister of Internal Trade and Transport. Tim Hodgson has been appointed as the new Minister of Natural Resources.
Carney has stated that Canada will spend billions of dollars to reduce its economic dependence on the U.S. He also revealed plans to cut public spending.
The Prime Minister has promised tax cuts and the elimination of internal trade barriers. According to the Liberal platform, an additional 130 billion Canadian dollars will be spent over the next four years. The budget deficit for 2025-26 is projected to reach 62.3 billion Canadian dollars.
