A fire caused by methane gas at a coal processing plant in Russia’s Yakutia region injured four people and prompted a large-scale emergency response, according to officials.

A methane fire broke out at a coal processing plant in Neryungri, located in Russia’s far northeastern Republic of Sakha (Yakutia), injuring four workers and prompting a major firefighting effort, authorities and company officials confirmed early Wednesday.

The incident occurred in a finished goods warehouse at the plant, which is owned by the Russian mining group Mechel through its subsidiary Yakutugol—the largest coal producer in the Sakha Republic. The Neryungri facility has been operational since 1984 and produces up to nine million tonnes of coal annually.

According to a statement from Mechel, all workers were successfully evacuated from the premises. More than 50 firefighters and 12 units of equipment were deployed to contain the blaze.

Denis Gerasimenko, deputy chief of the Neryungri Firefighting and Rescue Squad, said in a video message shared on Telegram that the fire was difficult to extinguish due to the building's layout and the high flammability of the stored materials.

Several Russian Telegram news outlets reported an explosion at the plant prior to the fire, but Reuters said it could not independently verify those claims.
