Police in Berlin have shot and killed a man suspected of fatally stabbing another man at an underground station.
Authorities said the altercation escalated when the suspect, a 43-year-old Syrian man, pulled out a kitchen knife and stabbed the victim, a 29-year-old German man, three times.
Police noted there is no indication the attack was motivated by Islamist terrorism.
The suspect attempted to flee but was shot at least three times by officers on the street. He was resuscitated at the scene and taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries. Despite emergency surgery, he later died.
According to Berlin Police, both the victim and the suspect were previously known to law enforcement and had prior convictions for assault, resisting arrest, attacking police officers, and violating narcotics laws.
