Chinese President Xi Jinping urged EU unity against tariff "bullying" during Spanish PM Sanchez’s visit, calling for deeper China-EU ties to defend globalization and economic stability amid escalating trade tensions with the U.S.

Chinese President Xi Jinping has called for stronger cooperation between China and the European Union to defend globalisation and oppose "unilateral acts of bullying", in a pointed response to U.S. tariff policies. Speaking during Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez’s visit to Beijing, Xi emphasised that "there are no winners in a tariff war," highlighting the need for joint action to ensure global economic stability.

Sanchez echoed the sentiment, urging dialogue between the U.S. and China while pushing for a more balanced China-EU trade relationship. His visit, aimed at strengthening economic and political ties, saw both nations sign agreements on science, education, and trade—particularly in pork and cherry exports.

Amid escalating U.S.-China tensions, with tariffs soaring above 145% on Chinese goods and China retaliating in kind, the EU has paused its countermeasures during a temporary 90-day reprieve. Sanchez hopes the European Commission will use this window to secure an optimal deal with Washington.

Xi reaffirmed China’s support for EU unity, encouraging collaboration in green energy, smart cities, and high-tech sectors—areas where the EU seeks to catch up with Chinese advances. Spain’s deepening ties with Beijing signal growing EU interest in navigating a multipolar world economy.
