Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan told Russian President Vladimir Putin in a phone call that cooperation between their countries is "crucial" for resolving regional issues, Türkiye's Communications Directorate announced on Friday.

Their discussion covered bilateral ties and global affairs. Erdogan reaffirmed Türkiye’s support for ending the Russia-Ukraine war and offered to host peace talks.

He also stressed that goodwill measures ensuring safe commercial navigation in the Black Sea would aid the peace process and reiterated Türkiye’s role in preventing conflict in the region.

On Syria, Erdogan underscored Türkiye’s commitment to working with Russia to maintain Syria’s territorial integrity and stability. He highlighted the need for joint efforts to counter sectarian divisions and lift sanctions. He also expressed support for integrating the “Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF)” into the central government and ensuring Syria no longer serves as a haven for terrorist groups.

On 11 March, the Syrian Presidency announced an agreement integrating the SDF into Syria’s institutions to reinforce national unity and prevent division.
