U.S. President Trump has withdrawn Rep. Elise Stefanik’s UN ambassador nomination to preserve the GOP’s slim House majority.

U.S. President Donald Trump announced Thursday that he is withdrawing Rep. Elise Stefanik’s nomination to serve as U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, after months of delays due to concerns over Republicans’ slim majority in the House.

Stefanik had not resigned her congressional seat, and with the GOP holding only a narrow edge, every vote remains critical.

Trump confirmed the decision in a social media post, stating, “It is essential that we maintain EVERY Republican Seat in Congress.”

Republicans currently hold 218 seats, while Democrats have 213. Four seats remain vacant. Following Trump’s announcement, House Speaker Mike Johnson praised Stefanik’s “selfless decision” and acknowledged the party’s fragile majority.

The move reflects growing anxiety among House Republicans, led by Johnson, about losing their narrow control—particularly ahead of two special elections in Florida next week. Even a small shift in seats could tip the balance to Democrats and jeopardize efforts to advance Trump’s agenda in the coming months.
