The Trump administration plans to end US funding for Gavi, the global vaccine initiative, and cut back malaria efforts, according to documents obtained by The New York Times.
A 281-page USAID spreadsheet sent to Congress details the termination of over 5,000 foreign aid programs, with fewer than 900 continuing.
Gavi, which supplies vaccines to children in developing countries, will lose $2.6 billion in US support, potentially leaving 75 million children unvaccinated and causing 1.2 million deaths. The US, previously covering 13% of Gavi’s budget, will also scale back malaria programs in nations like Cameroon and Tanzania.
However, funding will continue for HIV and tuberculosis treatments, as well as food aid for crisis-affected countries.
