The United Nations AIDS agency (UNAIDS) has warned that cuts to the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) funding could lead to an additional 2,000 new HIV infections every day worldwide.

Winnie Byanyima, executive director of UNAIDS, stated on Monday that if U.S. funding is not restored or replaced by other nations, there could be 6.3 million more AIDS-related deaths over the next four years. "We have not heard of other governments pledging to fill the gap," Byanyima said, underscoring the critical need for continued international support in the fight against HIV and AIDS.

The warning highlights the potential devastating consequences of reduced funding for global HIV prevention and treatment programs, urging swift action to prevent a reversal of progress made in the global fight against the epidemic.
