Heavy rains from storm Martinho have forced evacuations and emergency declarations in several Spanish regions, following weeks of intense downpours.

About 48 people have been evacuated from the municipality of Mejorada del Campo in Spain following heavy rainfall.

The country continues to be battered by storms, with the latest storm, named Martinho, prompting several cities to declare states of emergency and evacuate residents.

Dozens of roads have been closed, and rivers have overflowed across large areas of central and northern Spain. In the central city of Ávila, a state of emergency was declared after the Adaja and Chico rivers burst their banks, causing severe flooding.

In the southern region of Andalusia, police are still searching for a motorcyclist who went missing four days ago.

Although Spain has faced years of severe drought, persistent rainfall over the past two weeks — especially in the south — has overwhelmed reservoirs and riverbanks.
