Thousands of striking teachers rallied in Mexico City demanding better retirement conditions and policy reversals.

Mexican teachers concluded a 72-hour strike with a march to the National Palace in Mexico City, demanding improved retirement conditions.

Thousands of protesters, organized by the public education workers’ union (CNTE), marched through the streets to Zócalo Square, where they set up camp in front of the government building.

The teachers are calling for the repeal of a 2007 law that worsened their retirement terms by raising the legal retirement age from 58 to 65 for men with 30 years of service, and from 58 to 65 for women with 28 years of service, among other demands.

CNTE representatives met with the Minister of Education on Tuesday and reached an agreement that President Claudia Sheinbaum’s administration would withdraw a proposed reform of the Institute for Social Security and Services for State Workers.

However, the dialogue was not enough to convince union members to call off the strike.
