Trump described the move as necessary to cut costs and raise educational standards in the U.S., claiming they lag behind those of Europe and China.
He stated that, despite spending more on education than any other country, U.S. students "rank near the bottom of the list in terms of success."
By law, the Department of Education—established in 1979—cannot be abolished without congressional approval.
The White House said the administration would work to eliminate parts of the department within the limits of the law.
