A tragic plane crash off the coast of Honduras has claimed seven lives after the aircraft plunged into the sea moments after departing Roatán Island. Authorities say several passengers may still be trapped inside.

A plane crashed just off the Caribbean coast of Honduras on Monday night, minutes after taking off from Roatán Island. Seven people were killed, while 10 others were pulled from the wreckage alive, authorities confirmed.

The Jetstream aircraft, operated by the Honduran airline Lanhsa, was carrying 14 passengers and three crew members. The wreckage was found about 1 kilometre (0.6 miles) off the island's coast. Among the passengers were a U.S. national, a French national, and two minors. The flight was scheduled to fly to La Ceiba airport on the Honduran mainland.

Roatán fire captain Franklin Borjas confirmed the death toll, while officials detailed the ongoing rescue efforts. Among the victims was well-known Garifuna musician Aurelio Martinez Suazo.

The cause of the crash remains unclear, and the airline has yet to comment. Borjas confirmed the survivors were taken to a nearby hospital, with rescue teams facing difficult conditions. The crash occurred shortly after takeoff, and adverse weather and rocky terrain have complicated search efforts.

Rescue divers have reported zero visibility in the water, making the recovery challenging. Roatán, the largest of Honduras' Bay Islands, is a popular tourist destination known for its vibrant coral reefs.
