U.S. airstrikes on Yemen’s capital killed nine civilians as President Trump vowed to pressure Houthi rebels to halt maritime attacks.
At least nine civilians have been killed and nine others injured after U.S. President Donald Trump ordered a series of airstrikes on Yemen’s capital, Sanaa.
He vowed to use "overwhelming lethal force" against Iranian-backed Houthi rebels until they cease attacks on shipping assets along a key maritime corridor.
The strikes mark the largest U.S. military operation in the Middle East since Trump took office in January. They come as the U.S. increases sanctions on Tehran while seeking to bring it to the negotiating table over its nuclear program.
The airstrikes follow the Houthis' recent declaration that they would resume attacks on Israeli vessels off Yemen’s coast in response to Israel’s blockade on Gaza. No Houthi attacks have been reported since.
In a statement, the Houthis' political bureau condemned the strikes as a "war crime" and vowed retaliation.
