Combating Islamophobia and global calls for action

Islamophobia is a form of fear, prejudice, and hatred that incites threats, insults, provocation, and violence against both Muslims and non-Muslims, both online and offline. As it evolves into structural and cultural racism, it targets Muslim symbols and values.

While some experts prefer the term “hatred against Muslims” over “Islamophobia,” fearing it may suppress free speech, international law protects individuals, and Islamophobia can also affect non-Muslims.

UN Special Rapporteur Nazila Ghanea emphasizes that states must take action against religious hatred and promote diversity in multicultural societies. Monitoring hate speech, legislative reforms, and trust-building are key components of this effort.

Governments have taken steps to combat Islamophobia through legislative measures, awareness campaigns, and the prevention of hate crimes. The Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) has declared March 15 as the International Day to Combat Islamophobia, calling for global dialogue. The UN’s move to appoint a Special Envoy on Islamophobia is another significant step in this fight.
