A blast at a mosque in northwestern Pakistan injured four people, including two children and a local Islamist party leader, as authorities investigate the attack.

A blast tore through a mosque in northwestern Pakistan, injuring four people, including two children and a local leader of the Jamiat Ulema Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) political party.

Police believe Abdullah Nadeem, the JUI-F leader, was the target of the explosion. He has been hospitalized with serious injuries.

Authorities say the perpetrator of the attack remains unknown at this time.

Violence has been escalating in Pakistan’s border regions with Afghanistan in recent months. Earlier this week, separatist militants in southwestern Balochistan hijacked a train and held passengers hostage in a day-long standoff with security forces.

Pakistan has vowed to crack down on rising militancy, accusing militants of finding safe haven in neighboring Afghanistan—a claim the ruling Afghan Taliban deny.
