South Korea is ramping up security measures as the Constitutional Court prepares to rule on whether to oust or reinstate impeached President Yoon Suk Yeol, with large protests expected.
North Korea’s Foreign Ministry has condemned upcoming U.S.-South Korea military exercises as a "dangerous provocative act," warning they could trigger conflict, state media KCNA reported on Monday.
The Freedom Shield exercises, set to begin Monday and run until March 20, are aimed at enhancing joint military readiness against potential threats, according to the South Korean military.
North Korea has long opposed these drills, calling them a rehearsal for invasion. In a statement, Pyongyang’s Foreign Ministry warned that the situation on the Korean Peninsula could escalate "to the extreme point" and lead to accidental armed conflict.
The ministry also claimed the drills would harm U.S. security, though it did not elaborate.
Washington and Seoul have defended the exercises as defensive in nature, saying they are essential for maintaining stability in the region.
