On Thursday, during military exercises in Pocheon, South Korea, two fighter jets unintentionally dropped bombs in a civilian area, injuring 15 people and causing damage to homes and a church. According to the fire service, two individuals sustained serious injuries.
Pocheon, located about 40 km northeast of Seoul near the North Korean border, was the site of the incident. The South Korean Air Force confirmed that eight 500-pound Mk82 bombs were dropped outside the intended range by two KF-16 jets during joint drills.
The Air Force stated that the incident occurred due to incorrect coordinates entered by the pilot. Authorities have suspended live-fire exercises while they investigate, though it will not affect the upcoming joint military drills between South Korea and the US. Local residents have previously raised concerns about the proximity of military training grounds to civilian areas.
