Kim Jong Un supervised a strategic cruise missile test and ordered full nuclear readiness, calling it the key to national defense, state media reported.
The missile test, conducted Wednesday over the sea off North Korea’s west coast, was intended as a warning to enemies and a demonstration of the country’s nuclear capabilities, the KCNA news agency said.
Kim said a “powerful striking ability” is the “most perfect deterrence and defense capacity,” according to KCNA. He called for heightened battle readiness, saying North Korea’s nuclear forces must always be prepared to defend the country’s sovereignty.
The test comes as North Korea continues to develop strategic cruise missiles designed to carry nuclear warheads. Unlike ballistic missiles, which are banned under United Nations Security Council resolutions, cruise missiles do not face the same level of international restrictions.
The Security Council has imposed multiple sanctions on North Korea over its nuclear weapons and ballistic missile programs.
The report of the test follows Kim’s visits to military schools, where he emphasized ideological and tactical training for young officers.
Although Kim did not name specific countries, he has frequently criticized the United States and South Korea. His remarks come despite previous diplomatic engagement with former U.S. President Donald Trump, who has expressed interest in reopening talks.
Trump and Kim held historic summit meetings during Trump’s first term, though negotiations ultimately stalled.
