Parts of Colombia overwhelmed by flood waters. Torrential rains have triggered catastrophic flooding and landslides across the country, displacing tens of thousands and leaving communities devastated.
In response to the escalating crisis, Colombian President Gustavo Petro declared a nationwide state of disaster. He announced that more than 300 million dollars would be needed for initial aid to support the thousands affected.
Chocó, a region on Colombia’s northwest Pacific coast, has seen the worst of the flooding. Entire neighbourhoods have been submerged, with roads, bridges, and homes destroyed. For many, basic needs like food, shelter, and medical care are now out of reach.
Local responders and humanitarian organizations are delivering aid, but access to isolated rural areas remains limited. More than 90,000 people have been forced to evacuate across the nation.
The scope of the destruction is straining Colombia’s emergency resources.
