A terrifying hostage situation unfolded at a Pennsylvania hospital when a gunman entered the intensive care unit, taking staff members hostage. During the standoff, the suspect, who was armed, moved into the hallway holding a female staff member at gunpoint, with her hands bound. A violent exchange of gunfire ensued when police arrived on the scene, resulting in the tragic death of Officer Andrew Duarte and the injury of five others, including two police officers, a nurse, a custodian, and a doctor who was grazed by a bullet.
Authorities quickly responded to the incident, and after a brief but intense confrontation, the gunman was fatally shot by police. The injured victims, fortunately, are in stable condition, and no further fatalities were reported.
Governor Josh Shapiro visited the hospital to express his condolences and commend the actions of the police officers for their courage in preventing even greater harm.
