Trump Wants Nuclear Arms Talks With Putin and Xi

U.S. President Donald Trump has expressed interest in talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping on limiting nuclear arsenals, saying denuclearization would be a goal in his second term.

Speaking in the Oval Office on Thursday, Trump said there is no reason to continue nuclear expansion, suggesting that funds should be redirected to other priorities.

The New START treaty, the last major U.S.-Russia arms control pact, is set to expire on February 5, 2026, with talks currently stalled.

Trump claimed he had reached an understanding with Putin on nuclear reductions in his first term, but efforts stalled during the COVID-19 pandemic. He also said China is more open to discussions than before.

Trump did not specify a timeline, but said he hopes talks with Putin and Xi will begin in the near future, possibly leading to a trilateral agreement.
