U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio has emphasized the need for bold diplomacy to end the Russia-Ukraine war, during a call with Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha, the State Department confirmed.
The diplomatic discussions follow U.S. President Donald Trump’s separate calls with Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, marking his first major engagement in the conflict.
The State Department statement said that Rubio and Sybiha spoke about negotiated solutions aimed at achieving a sustainable peace, while the U.S. reaffirmed its commitment to Ukraine’s independence.
Trump recently stated that he does not see Ukraine joining NATO and believes it is unlikely that Kyiv will regain all of its territory.
The war began with Russia’s full-scale invasion in February 2022, following its 2014 annexation of Crimea.
