Wildfires in Chile’s Araucania region have left one person dead and over 40 homeless. Authorities warn the situation remains critical.
Flames tore through Chile’s Central Araucania region, turning forests into ashes. The wildfires have already killed one person, destroyed 30 homes, and displaced dozens. That's according to the National Service for Disaster Prevention and Response.
Authorities remain on high alert and are closely monitoring the situation. Fire crews are helping to evacuate 860,000 people to safety.
Helicopters are dropping water over the affected areas and tractors dig firebreaks to slow the blaze, as thick smoke billows across the landscape.
The crisis follows last year’s wildfires in the Valparaiso region, which killed at least 136 people and destroyed more than 6,600 homes.
