1. Paris AI summit draws world leaders and CEOs eager for technology wave

World leaders and technology executives are convening in Paris on Monday to discuss how to safely embrace artificial intelligence at a time of mounting resistance to heavy-handed red tape that businesses say stifles innovation.

Eagerness to rein in AI has waned since previous AI summits in Britain and South Korea that focused world powers' attention on technology's risks after ChatGPT's viral launch in 2022.

2. Trump to announce 25% steel and aluminum tariffs in latest trade escalation

U.S. President Donald Trump said on Sunday he will introduce new 25% tariffs on all steel and aluminum imports into the U.S., on top of existing metals duties, in another major escalation of his trade policy overhaul.

Trump, speaking to reporters on Air Force One on his way to the NFL Super Bowl in New Orleans, said he will announce the new metals tariffs on Monday.

3. Trump wants US to own Gaza, could let Middle East states help rebuild

U.S. President Donald Trump said on Sunday he is committed to buying and owning Gaza, but could allow sections of the war-ravaged land to be rebuilt by other states in the Middle East.

“I'm committed to buying and owning Gaza. As far as us rebuilding it, we may give it to other states in the Middle East to build sections of it, other people may do it, through our auspices. But we’re committed to owning it, taking it, and making sure that Hamas doesn’t move back.”

4. Erdogan approves Türkiye-Azerbaijan cooperation agreement on migration

President of Türkiye Recep Tayyip Erdogan has approved the "Agreement on Cooperation in the Field of Migration between the Government of the Republic of Türkiye and the Government of the Republic of Azerbaijan."

The document was signed between Azerbaijan and Türkiye on March 6, 2024, in Ankara.

5 .Madrid residents protest 'horror' of city's housing conditions

Thousands took to the streets of Madrid on Sunday (February 9) to demand the right to dignified housing and to call for urgent solutions from authorities regarding what they describe as a "housing emergency."

6. Iran can block Strait of Hormuz, IRGC navy chief says

Iran can close the Strait of Hormuz in the Persian Gulf if ordered by senior officials, the commander of the Revolutionary Guards (IRGC) navy warned after US President Donald Trump announced plans to cut Iran’s oil exports to zero.

"We have the capability to close the Strait of Hormuz," Alireza Tangsiri was quoted as saying by Iranian media on Sunday in defiance against Trump's threats.
