Trump to meet leaders of Azerbaijan and Armenia in Washington

On Friday, August 8, U.S. President Donald Trump will hold separate bilateral meetings with Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan.

The published schedule states that the Armenian Prime Minister will be received at 2:30 p.m. Washington time (10:30 p.m. Baku time), followed by talks with the President of Azerbaijan at 3:20 p.m. (11:20 p.m. Baku time).

Later that same day, at 4:00 p.m. (midnight Baku time, August 9), a joint statement is expected to be made by Trump, the President of Azerbaijan, and the Prime Minister of Armenia.

U.S. envoy Thomas Witkoff touches down in Moscow for security talks.

U.S. special envoy Steve Witkoff has arrived in Moscow and was greeted at the airport by Russia's investment envoy Kirill Dmitriev, a source involved in the preparation of the visit told Reuters on Wednesday.

U.S. President Donald Trump, who warned that he would impose sanctions on Russia if Moscow does not agree to a ceasefire in the war in Ukraine before Friday, had said earlier that Witkoff might be travelling to Moscow this week.

Heavy rains, landslides hamper rescue efforts in northern Indian state, dozens missing

Heavy rain hampered rescue efforts in India's Himalayan state of Uttarakhand on Wednesday, a day after sudden flooding and landslides killed four people and left dozens missing.

Teams of army and disaster force rescuers struggled to reach Dharali village, a popular tourist spot that serves as a pit-stop before climbing to the Hindu pilgrimage town of Gangotri, as landslides blocked a major highway and heavy rain continued to pelt the region, local media and authorities said.

"The number of missing persons is unknown, however the relief efforts have continued through the night. We are trying to rescue people and take them to safety," Harshavardhan, an army colonel leading rescue efforts, said in an X post shared by the Indian army.

Russia, China naval forces to carry out joint Asia Pacific patrol

Russian and Chinese naval vessels plan to conduct a joint patrol in the Asia Pacific region, following recent exercises in the Sea of Japan, Russia’s official Interfax has reported.

Citing a statement on Wednesday from the Russian Pacific Fleet’s press service, Interfax said that ships from the Russian Navy and China’s People’s Liberation Army (PLA) Navy “will form a new task group to carry out joint patrol missions in the Asia-Pacific region”.

Hiroshima marks 80th anniversary since U.S. atomic bombing of the city

Japan held a memorial service and ceremony for victims and the remaining survivors of the U.S. atomic bombing of Hiroshima, marking its 80th anniversary and renewing pledges of working towards a world without nuclear weapons.

The southwestern Japanese city of Hiroshima on Wednesday marked the 80th anniversary of the U.S. atomic bombing of the city. Many aging survivors attending the memorial service expressed frustration over the growing support amongst global leaders for nuclear weapons as a deterrence.
