The sixth World Nomad Games have officially opened in Bishkek, bringing together athletes, cultural representatives and world leaders for a celebration of traditional nomadic heritage.
The opening ceremony took place on Monday (31 August) at Bishkek Arena, ahead of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit hosted by Kyrgyzstan.
The event was attended by several leaders, including Russian President Vladimir Putin, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev and Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko.
The World Nomad Games were established in 2014 as an international platform to preserve and promote the traditions, sports and cultural heritage of nomadic communities.
This year’s edition features participants from 104 countries, according to organisers, making it the largest gathering in the history of the event.
The Games bring together athletes competing in traditional disciplines that reflect the history and lifestyle of nomadic peoples, particularly those of Central Asia and the wider Turkic world.
