Russian air attacks on Kyiv and the surrounding region have killed 12 people and injured several others, Ukrainian officials said, marking the sixth consecutive day of strikes. The attacks come as Moscow intensifies its use of drones and ballistic missiles against Ukraine.
Explosions were heard across Kyiv early on Tuesday, according to eyewitness accounts. City authorities said three people were killed and five others injured, while a fire broke out in a non-residential area.
In Kyiv, eight people were killed and fires broke out at several locations across the capital, emergency services said. Six of those killed were railway employees after Russian ballistic missiles struck a railway depot and other railway facilities, according to Oleksandr Pertsovskyi, head of Ukraine’s state rail company Ukrzaliznytsia.
In Boryspil, outside Kyiv, four people were killed and 13 others injured after missiles and drones hit a residential building and other sites, Governor Tymur Tkachenko said. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said an Indian citizen was among those killed, adding that the overnight barrage involved a “significant number” of jet-powered drones and ballistic missiles.
Ukraine’s air force said it managed to shoot down five ballistic missiles, while Kyiv recently received a limited number of Patriot interceptors.
The latest strikes disrupted daily life for millions of residents, with air raid alerts issued across much of Ukraine. The attacks came as Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said he held a “detailed and constructive” call with U.S. President Donald Trump’s envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner on efforts to advance peace talks.
Zelenskyy said discussions were ongoing over dates for a planned visit by the U.S. representatives to Ukraine.
The Kremlin also said Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi urged Russian President Vladimir Putin to end the war, while Putin said Moscow was continuing along that path.
Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha called on allies to increase pressure on Moscow and provide additional air defence systems, saying Kyiv is running critically low on U.S.-made Patriot interceptors needed to counter Russian ballistic missiles.
Russia’s Defence Ministry said Moscow had targeted Ukrainian military and energy facilities in Kyiv and Odesa. Ukrainian drone attacks also continued inside Russia, with local authorities reporting damage in regions including Samara, home to major oil refineries.
In Russia’s Samara region, local authorities reported damage to civilian facilities following an air attack.
The NATO Baltic air policing mission activated fighter jets in Latvia, while Finland restricted air and maritime traffic near Russia as Russian authorities reported drone activity in the country’s northwestern Leningrad region.
Both Russia and Ukraine deny targeting civilians. The damage could not be independently verified.
Meanwhile, Estonia said drones used in a Ukrainian strike against Russia briefly entered its airspace, with Defence Minister Hanno Pevkur saying the incident highlighted the importance of strengthening Ukraine’s air defences.
Russia launched an overnight attack on Ukraine’s southern Odesa region, damaging port and export infrastructure as well as the Orlivka border crossing with Romania, Ukrainian officials said on Tuesday.
The strikes also targeted a border crossing with NATO-member Romania in the Odesa region, where repeated attacks on ports and shipping have disrupted Ukraine’s agricultural exports and raised concerns over global food supplies.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said the strike deliberately targeted export facilities and the border checkpoint. Ukrainian emergency services also reported damage to energy infrastructure and a residential building, where one person was injured.
Operations at the Orlivka ferry checkpoint were temporarily suspended. The attack comes amidst intensified Russian strikes on Odesa’s Black Sea and Danube export infrastructure, forcing Ukraine to increasingly rely on lower-capacity Danube ports and western railway routes for exports.
Despite the disruption, Ukrainian railway operator Ukrzaliznytsia said it had increased grain deliveries to Danube ports for onward export.
