Twelve people have died and at least 10 others were injured after a Polish-registered bus overturned on a motorway in eastern Hungary, officials said.
The crash happened in the early hours of Sunday (16 August) near Mezokeresztes, as the bus was travelling towards Nyiregyhaza on the M3 motorway.
Hungarian Prime Minister Peter Magyar confirmed the deaths in a Facebook post, while police said the injured had been taken to hospital.
Police said the bus left a straight section of the motorway, went into a ditch and overturned.
“Preliminary information suggests the driver likely fell asleep,” police said in a statement.
The driver has been taken into custody as authorities investigate the cause of the crash.
Polish President Karol Nawrocki said on X, "It is with deep sorrow that I received the tragic news of the Polish bus accident in Hungary, in which so many of our compatriots died."
Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski said on X "The consular service is operational. We are in contact with the Hungarian authorities. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs will provide verified information," he said.
Emergency services were sent to the scene overnight and treated survivors before taking those injured to nearby hospitals.
The accident has raised new concerns over road safety involving long-distance coach travel, particularly on overnight journeys.
Hungarian authorities have not yet released further details about the identities of those killed or the condition of the injured.
The investigation remains ongoing.
