Russian forces launched a missile attack on Kyiv early on Sunday, sparking fires in at least two districts of Ukraine's capital, Mayor Vitali Klitschko said.
The city's emergency service said two people were injured.
Klitschko said on Telegram that falling debris from the strike ignited a fire in a non-residential area in a northern suburb. Several cars were also set ablaze, while another fire broke out south of the city centre.
Reuters witnesses reported hearing explosions across Kyiv as air raid alerts were activated after 2 a.m. Each of the two alerts lasted around 30 minutes.
Unofficial Telegram channels published images that appeared to show market stalls on fire in a suburban area.
Russia has stepped up air attacks on Kyiv and other Ukrainian cities in recent weeks, as the war between the two countries continues.
Ukraine said earlier that its forces had carried out long-range strikes against a Russian military airfield and a rocket facility supporting Moscow’s emerging satellite internet network.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said on Saturday (15 August) that Ukrainian Flamingo cruise missiles struck a rocket facility around 900 km from Ukraine’s border. Zelenskyy said the strikes were part of Kyiv’s effort to reduce Russia’s military capabilities and pressure Moscow to end the war.
“It is important that Russia’s war potential be reduced. Peace is needed, and this must be evident in Russia - through concrete damage to specific facilities,” Zelenskyy wrote on X.
Ukraine’s armed forces said direct hits were recorded at an airfield in Russia’s Nizhny Novgorod region and at the Progress rocket centre in the Samara region. Fires were reported at both locations.
