Three students and three teachers have been killed in a school shooting in Thailand, with at least 15 injured and two in critical condition, according to Royal Thai Police.
Police has identified the suspected gunman as a student at the Debsirin Nonthaburi School in Nonthaburi province saying he took his own life shortly after the incident.
The suspect fired 26 rounds, with additional 34 rounds of ammunition later found at the scene. A student at the school told Reuters that they initially did not realise the sound was gunfire, “I didn’t think it was a gun at first,” the student said. “There were many shots: bang bang bang. Then it went quiet. Then it started again.”
Police later said the suspect had fatally shot his grandparents at their home before carrying out the attack at the school.
Thailand has a relatively high rate of civilian firearm ownership compared with other countries in Southeast Asia.
According to a 2017 report by the Small Arms Survey (SAS), civilians in Thailand owned more than 10.3 million firearms, equivalent to around 15 firearms per 100 people.
Thailand also has one of the highest rates of firearm-related homicides in Southeast Asia. According to data from the University of Washington’s 2019 Global Burden of Disease database, it had the second-highest rate in the region after the Philippines.
