Representatives from Afghanistan, Turkmenistan, and Turkey’s Çalık Holding company met to discuss the launch of practical work on the TAP-500 electricity project. This project aims to transmit electricity from Turkmenistan to Afghanistan, with plans to extend the transmission to Pakistan.
Afghanistan has actively pursued economic and energy cooperation with neighboring countries and beyond. Among the most significant developments are regional energy and transit projects that are positioning Afghanistan as a vital hub for both energy resources and trade.
Among the key energy projects is the TAPI pipeline – a natural gas pipeline running from Turkmenistan through Afghanistan to Pakistan and India.
Another significant energy initiative is the CASA-1000, a major electricity transmission project designed to address energy shortages in Afghanistan and Pakistan. The CASA-1000 will transmit over 1,000 megawatts of surplus electricity from Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan to the region, boosting economic development and energy security.
In addition to energy projects, Afghanistan is increasingly becoming a key transit hub for regional trade. Several railway projects are underway to improve connectivity with neighboring countries. Afghanistan is currently building railway lines connecting with Iran, Uzbekistan, and Turkmenistan, enhancing trade routes and fostering regional cooperation.
Work is also progressing on the Lapis Lazuli Corridor, a trade route designed to connect Afghanistan with Turkey, passing through Turkmenistan, Azerbaijan, and Georgia. This corridor is expected to significantly enhance trade and transportation links between Afghanistan and Europe.
With significant projects like TAPI, CASA-1000, and the Lapis Lazuli Corridor, Afghanistan is positioning itself as an important player in South and Central Asia’s economic future.
