More than 700,000 people have been evacuated to safety in southern China after Typhoon Noul made landfall in Guangdong province, bringing destructive winds and urging warnings of torrential rain and flash flooding.
Chinese authorities issued their highest alert for flash floods in several provinces as the storm moved inland on Sunday (26 July). Although the typhoon has begun to weaken, forecasters warned that heavy rain could continue across large parts of southern China until Tuesday.
Typhoon Noul came ashore in Huidong county at around 3.50am local time, according to provincial officials. It is the 12th named tropical cyclone of the year and the third to affect China this month.
The National Meteorological Centre forecast heavy to torrential rain across much of southern China through Monday morning, with some areas expected to see exceptionally heavy downpours.
Provinces including Jiangxi, Hunan and Fujian are expected to bear the brunt of the rainfall as the storm continues inland.
Officials have urged local authorities to closely monitor areas most vulnerable to flooding, including mountainous regions, riverbanks, valleys, bridges and construction sites.
Before making landfall, Noul passed within 80 kilometres of Hong Kong, bringing gale-force winds and widespread disruption.
The Hong Kong Observatory said the typhoon was weakening as it travelled inland and downgraded the city's warning signal from No. 8 to No. 3 on Sunday afternoon.
Flights at Hong Kong International Airport, which had been largely suspended for more than 12 hours, were expected to resume gradually later in the day.
Despite the easing winds, authorities warned that rain and strong southwesterly gusts could continue to affect parts of the city.
